Coastal Renovation using insulating Lime Plaster and Beeck Paint
Posted by Sarah, Celtic Sustainables on 7th Jan 2025
Local builder and member of Federation of Master Builders, Che Lewis, recently renovated a coastal property in Aberporth using traditional lime materials and breathable mineral paints.
The property is ideally located right by the beach, with only a road separating it from the shoreline. Due to its exposure to high winds, salt-laden air, and vehicle pollution, the exterior was looking tired and in desperate need of repair. The interior also faced significant issues, as it was mouldy and extremely damp, requiring extensive renovations both inside and out to make it habitable again. After removing all the cement renders and plasters, he applied a base of Cornerstone insulating plaster to all internal walls. The insulating render is an excellent choice for interior walls because it incorporates recycled aggregates and an additive that allows it to adhere to virtually any background. Additionally, Cornerstone insulating render improves the thermal performance of a wall while maintaining a permeable fabric. It is a dry-mix product, requiring only the addition of water. The interior walls were then finished with Lime Green Solo one-coat-plaster to create an even, smooth surface ready for a breathable paint. Che and his client chose to decorate the interior walls with Earthborn Claypaint in white, providing an ultra-matt finish that ensures the walls remain vapour permeable.
After visiting our Cardigan showroom for advice on various finishes for the render, Che decided to use Beeck Exterior masonry paint in white. This is an excellent choice for exposed properties. Beeck paints are completely vapour permeable and environmentally friendly, with low VOC levels. Che was also pleased with the paint's exceptional lightfastness and durability, which means that it will withstand natural weathering and maintain its appearance for a long time.
Beeck mineral paints are naturally fireproof and resistant to mould growth. They are free from chemicals and can be fully recycled.
