Keim Paints – Cradle to Cradle Certified Products

Keim Paints – Cradle to Cradle Certified Products

Posted by Celtic Sustainables on 20th Sep 2022

We are thrilled that Keim has recently achieved Cradle to Cradle Certified® Silver for 65 of the paints within their range! The same products also achieved the Material Health Certificate Gold.

65 Keim products are Cradle to Cradle Certified

This means that Keim currently has the most Cradle to Cradle Certified® products of all the brands that we stock. It equates to over 80% of Keim paint sales and includes our best-selling Soldalit Exterior Silicate PaintOptilEcosil ME and Innostar Interior Silicate Paints to mention just a few!

We are really pleased that Keim has invested the considerable time and resources to go through the certification scheme as Cradle to Cradle Certified® is the global standard for products to determine that are safe, circular and responsibly made.

By “circular” the scheme means that at the end of the lifespan of the product the materials within that product can return to be further consumed. For circularity, a distinction is made between materials that are “commodities” and those that are “consumables”. When commodities come to the end of their use, they are disassembled into pure-grade raw materials and returned to a technical cycle. At the end of the use phase for consumables, these go back into the natural, biological cycle.

Within the Cradle to Cradle Certified® scheme, paints are allocated to the natural biological (consumables) cycle. Their component parts are returned to the environment in the long term through erosion, wear etc as a biological nutrient. Keim paints are made of mineral and natural raw materials and already protect or improve the biosphere while in use. They are extremely durable and also score highly within the scheme with attributes such as their ability to degrade air pollutants, or their particularly high vapour permeability.

"As leading specialist for mineral building protection, we are called upon to think ahead to a liveable future and to act accordingly already now in the present.

“Cradle to Cradle Certified® confirms that we do justice to this responsibility – not just with our products and system solutions but also with our social commitment inside and outside the company.”

Rüdiger Lugert, CEO Keim

Cradle to Cradle Scorecard for Keim Interior Paints

To obtain the Cradle to Cradle Certified® certificate, the products are assessed according to differing criteria in five categories.

  1. Material Health: ensuring materials are safe for humans and the environment.
  2. Product Circularity: enabling a circular economy through regenerative products and process design
  3. Clean Air & Climate Protection: protecting clean air, promoting renewable energy, and reducing harmful emissions
  4. Water & Soil Stewardship: safeguarding clean water and healthy soils
  5. Social Fairness: respecting human rights and contributing to a fair and equitable society

All the tested Keim products also achieved the GOLD level in the Material Health, Water and Soil and Social Fairness categories, however the overall certification results from the criterion with the lowest score, hence the SILVER level being awarded.
