Lime Day and fun at Naturewise Community Forest Garden

Lime Day and fun at Naturewise Community Forest Garden

Posted by Sarah, Celtic Sustainables on 25th Nov 2024

In the midst of a bustling October, our sister company,  Celtic Water, contributed a 800L Wall Tank for collecting rainwater to the Naturewise community garden nestled within the picturesque Parc Teifi business estate - our friendly neighbours!

When we offer Free UK delivery for all our water butts, we don’t always mean our Jimmy will handball it to site! In this instance, we carefully rolled the pallet from our unit down to Naturewise and, when we came to the rambling track, Jimmy carried it the rest of the way to its final resting spot!

Delivering an 800L wall tank to Naturewise

This original, durable, slimline water tank is a great space-saver capable of storing a large volume of rainwater. Usually, the tank is connected to a downpipe via a filter/diverter. In this case, Naturewise wanted to collect rainwater from the gutter of the green roof. It will save a great quantity of rain in preparation for summertime to water the vegetable beds and fruit trees.

Cardigan’s  Naturewise Community Forest Garden was established in 2019. Since then, they have constructed a bridge, shed, and shelter and have made the site safe. They have developed an edible landscape designed to replicate the natural structure of forests with tree, shrub, and herb associations. Plus, they offer fun courses for young people and adults throughout the year, allowing everyone to reconnect with nature and learn some cool new skills. How awesome is that?...

If that all sounds amazing and you want to get involved in community projects, they meet every Tuesday and the third Saturday of the month from 10 to 4 p.m. This month, they’ll be focusing on tree care, pond development, and expanding the medicinal beds. With a vast range of plants to look after and designs to implement, there are jobs for all, and families are welcome.

"All are welcome; there is always something to be done and ways to enhance your gardening skills and knowledge in forest gardening and permaculture." - Alpay Founder of Naturewise.

Lime Day at Naturewise Community Forest Garden

The half-day course was open to the public (announced very last minute) as well as to volunteers. It was led by Jud from Just in Lime, who demonstrated how to mix  Calbux quicklime for lime wash. During the course, they re-lime washed the exterior of the timber frame building.

In this photo, he is showing the proper method for mixing Calbux quicklime for lime wash. He starts by showing what not to do, which results in a bubbling, hot, and splattering lime mix that could cause blindness if it gets into anyone's eyes.

To mix limewash, begin with a 50:50 ratio and ensure it is mixed thoroughly. The limewash should have a thin consistency like that of whole milk. They added  Coloured Earth yellow pigment ochre to the limewash, producing a warm and bright finish.

Pembrokeshire Limework at Naturewise

In 2019, the talented lime specialist Jason Bushnell from Pembrokeshire Limework, skillfully demonstrated different lime wash techniques to the inside of the roundhouse, actively engaging volunteers. Jason is a highly experienced heritage and conservation builder, with over 30 years of experience in the trade. It's wonderful to see a local lime specialist taking the time to participate in these courses, share knowledge, and help keep the trade alive for future generations.
