Scaffolding Shelves treated in Treatex Oil ULTRA

Scaffolding Shelves treated in Treatex Oil ULTRA

Posted by Sarah, Celtic Sustainables on 3rd Mar 2022

We’re all looking for ways to reuse and recycle different materials now, and it’s no different for our Sharon who’s currently renovating her family home. Reclaimed scaffold boards are versatile, easy to work with and can be used to create all sorts of furniture in your home. They are perfect if you want to get a little bit creative (pinterest has loads of ideas to peak your creativity!) Customers have used them for work tops, or to make raised flower beds, Sharon decided to reuse them as shelves in her bathroom.

Simple scaffolding boards adds an authentic, urban feel to any room. To make the shelving, Sharon hard planed the board and then sanded to 80 grit (this is an important step, as you don’t want to over sand the timber!) then she cut the board to her desired size.

Then Sharon finished the look using one coat of Treatex Hardwax Oil Natural, which she had left over from previous renovation work around the house. You can use the Treatex natural as a base coat for lighter coloured woods to retain the natural colour. Hardwax Oil ULTRA Natural contains a small amount of white pigment to neutralise the darkening effect of a Hardwax Clear top coat. To keep the finished colour closer to the original untreated wood colour, Sharon applied a coat of the Hardwax Oil ULTRA Natural, followed by a coat of Hardwax Oil Clear ULTRA.

Treatex is a natural hardwax oil which provides a superior finish, enhancing the natural grain and beauty of the timber. She applied two coats very thinly with a natural bristle brush (making sure her finishing stroke went with the grain of wood).
Treatex is manufactured on a base of sustainable raw materials including linseed oil, sunflower oil, jojoba oil, beeswax, carnauba wax and candelilla wax. If you’re interested in giving Treatex a go yourself, you can try little samples in clear or in different tints yourself, you can buy them here. Treatex is also child safe for use on toys and play dens.

Sharon Says “Treatex is so versatile and lots of different effects can be achieved, I do advise to test first, as different timber reacts differently. I love my new shelves and treatex goes such a long way. The tin I used was from the kitchen revamp that time I used the white followed by the natural to give that whitewash look. I warm the tin in a bowl of boiling water with the lid off, then gave it a good stir. Warming the wax helped to apply it easier, as it had been sat in a very cold Garage for 2 yrs.”

We look forward to seeing Sharon’s next project (she’s always up to something and trying out new products at Celtic Sustainables!) Keep up to date with our product tests and trials on our Instagram account
