The Lime Demo Boards at Celtic Sustainables

The Lime Demo Boards at Celtic Sustainables

Posted by Ian, Building Materials Manager on 3rd Aug 2018

Things continue to move forward in our specialist Lime products display area, the latest development being the completion of our lime plaster display boards.  In an effort to help our local customers further their understanding of the benefits and mechanics of using breathable lime plasters, we called on the skills of a local lime expert and regular customer Jason Bushnell, owner of Pembrokeshire Limework. He has created a series of panels to demonstrate some of the materials and methods used in the application of lime plaster for traditional and modern building projects.

Jason started by constructing a framework of wooden battens to emulate a timber frame wall. This was then divided into 2 panels.  The first panel has a base structure of wooden lath to simulate a traditional restoration project.  As an example of a possible newbuild application, the second panel was given a base of woodwool board, a more modern render carrier board option. Over a period of a few weeks he then built up and finished the panels using a range of finishes including, traditional lime and sand render, Lime and hemp mixes and beautifully smooth fine lime finishing plasters.

The layers of lime plaster have been cleverly applied so every aspect of the build-up is visible, providing a great visual reference for our staff and customers when discussing projects. Each section has been numbered and adjoining display posters describe each stage of the process and the products used.

So, if you’re in the area and planning a project, or if you’re just interested to find out more about lime based building products, you can come and visit our dedicated lime area, see our great range of products and look at examples of how versatile this traditional building material can be.

The next project on the ’demo boards’ list is a display of coloured limewash examples. We have a great range of powdered pigments at Celtic Sustainables many of which are suitable for colouring limewash, so I’m off to mix some colours. Watch this space.
