Time to check your loft insulation

Time to check your loft insulation

Posted by Sarah, Celtic Sustainables on 21st Jan 2025

Can insulation save me money?

Insulation saves money by preventing heat loss and lowering heating costs. It also keeps your home cooler in the summer and reduces noise. Breathable insulation, such as Thermafleece, helps regulate humidity in the building.

Properly insulating your loft could save you up to £340 a year, preventing valuable heat - and therefore money - from escaping through the roof. There has never been a more pressing time than now to check your loft and plug any drafty places you can find!

Now is the perfect time to check your loft and seal any drafty areas you can find!

Jamie's Farm and Cosywool Sheepswool Insulation

We have been following  Jamie’s Farm, a charity that helps young people thrive through farming, family, and therapy. Children and young adults learn new skills, build friendships, and discover a renewed sense of purpose. They have six farms across the UK. To enhance the charity's financial sustainability, they are building two cabins on their Monmouthshire farm for Airbnb rentals.

Once the farm cabins are completed, guests can relax on a private deck and cosy up by the log burner. Visitors will also enjoy spectacular views and nature walks in the Wye Valley, all while contributing to a brighter future for young people.

Every visit supports a young person’s journey.

Using Thermafleece Cosywool

We are pleased to see Thermafleece Cosywool utilised in the cabins! Here’s their positive feedback regarding the insulation:

“We were able to tear the insulation easily and accurately to get a nice snug fit; using mineral wool or fibreglass, we would have had to use a knife and straight edge to prevent hazardous fibres filling the air in the workshop. This also allowed us to insulate the panels whilst other team members worked in the same space.”

They have now completed the wool-insulated panels for the cabins at Jamie's Farm, providing them with a highly insulated, low-VOC, breathable, yet very airtight shell. Currently, the cabins are fully insulated with Thermafloc VCL on the inside and Thermafleece breather membrane wrapping them. We’ll be keen to see the completion of the green roofs at the next stage!

Vapour Control Layer (VCL)
The Thermofloc VCL is a very substantial VCL that does not tear yet cuts cleanly and easily with a knife. This allowed us to fit the VCL membrane in the controlled environment of the workshop and then transport the panels without the worry of the VCL being damaged.

What is an airtight membrane tape & why should you use it?

Membrane tape is crucial for creating a fully sealed and airtight joint between different sections of a membrane, such as an airtight membrane or a breathable membrane. It prevents water leaks and air infiltration by securely adhering overlaps and sealing gaps at seams or junctions where the membrane meets other building elements. Essentially, membrane tape ensures that the membrane functions effectively by maintaining its barrier properties across the entire surface.

We have a selection of tapes available on our website for use with breathable membranes and VSD membranes.

Why Thermafleece Cosywool is a perfect choice for cabins

The  Cosywool is a sustainable, breathable, dynamic option with excellent thermal insulation. This will help the Cabins stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter without the use of harmful chemicals!

- Wool fibres effectively trap air, moisture and harmful chemicals.

- Insulating Properties: Wool fibres are naturally crimped, creating millions of tiny air pockets within the fabric. These pockets trap air, a poor conductor of heat, thereby maintaining your body's warmth.

- Rolls start from £24 inc VAT

What are the environmental benefits of using Thermfleece insulation?

Thermafleece uses coarse dark wool that would otherwise go to waste. Each kg of wool locks up about 2 kilograms of carbon dioxide, which helps remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

Once Thermafleece is installed in your property, it will last the life of the building, significantly reducing the impacts of replacement and repair.
