We helped Renovate this Listed London Cemetery Lodge
8th May 2018
The West Lodge at Paddington Cemetery has been given a new lease of life following years of neglect.
When Peter Dow came to us looking for paints to renovate his semi-gothic Victorian cemetery lodge, we knew we were going to help to create something amazing. Following years of neglect, the lodge was in need of a good dose of TLC, and some sympathetic remodelling to bring its 1970s red brick extension into place with the rest of the building.
Because Peter understood the importance of allowing his house to breathe, he was in search of our Earthborn Ecopro Silicate Masonry System which lets moisture out and therefore stops mould from forming.
He said: “We used a hot pressure steam wash to remove all the old paint, removed all the cement repairs and added in new sections of stone as necessary. It is important that masonry walls are allowed to breathe, rather than locking in damp using conventional materials, so we specified putty based lime mortar and Earthborn’s Ecopro Silicate Masonry System.”
The Ecopro Silicate Masonry System is perfect for use on mineral based surfaces such as stone, brick, concrete, plaster, and render. The environmental credentials are great, and it offers a high performance alternative to conventional masonry paints and lime wash. The finish is classic matt, and it won’t yellow over time.
The System is made up of a water-based primer and topcoat that forms a bond with the mineral substrate beneath. This forms a hardwearing, water and weather-resistant barrier.
Peter went on to say: “Ecopro Silicate Masonry Paint and Primer have a lot of body, so they provide excellent covering power. We just needed one coat of primer and two coats of paint to give complete cover across both the stone and brick. We chose the Portland shade of paint and it works really well in unifying the extension with the main lodge building.”
