Animal hair is a traditional addition to lime renders as a means of improving tensile strength, reducing shrinkage and preventing cracking. The hair is teased into the mortar mix prior to the use. Hair can be used to reinforce all base coats and is highly recommend for plasters that are being applied to lath backgrounds. The hair should be added to the first two coats but not the final finishing coat.
Application
Natural animal hairs should be carefully teased into the lime plaster during the mixing stage. Avoid adding to much hair at a time as it will tend to clump in the mix and be ineffective.
