Keim Granital is an environmentally friendly mineral paint, which is extremely durable, vapour permeable and lightfast.
It is suitable for use on all kinds of unpainted mineral substrates. With the addition of a bridging coat it can also be used to re-coat existing paints which are in sound condition.
The crystalline structure of Granital allows vapour to pass through the coating from the substrate, whilst protecting against moisture ingress. This helps to eliminate blistering and flaking, a problem regularly encountered with conventional paints.

General Preparation considerations for all surfaces
The key to optimum performance with Keim products is preparation prior to decoration.
- Remove flaking and unstable material back to a sound edge.
- Check that any remaining coatings are stable and feather the edges with sand paper.
- Flat down any shiny surfaces with sandpaper to create a good key
- Remove any Mould and Fungal growth and treat the affected area with Keim Algicid.
- Repair cracks with Keim Spachtel filler.
- Ensure air and surface temperatures are between 5-30ºC.
Clean all surfaces with clean cold water to remove dirt, dust and contaminants. Leave surfaces to dry naturally.
Please note: Consumption rates are offered for guideline purposes only. For more accurate measures, site trials should be conducted.
Unpainted Lime Render
Follow the general preparation guidelines.
Specific considerations for lime plaster.
Any newly lime rendered/repaired areas must be allowed to dry out for a minimum period of 28 days and to have carbonated to a minimum depth of 2.5mm prior to application of Keim Mineral Paints. Please note that this is a minimum requirement, and in extreme cases (for example pure lime putty renders) the time required may be significantly longer.
Application
Apply a coat of Keim Granital Dilution with a brush or roller and work well into the surface. This will help to reduce porosity. Leave a minimum period of 12 hours before further decoration
Apply 2 coats of Keim Granital with a brush or roller. The first coat should be diluted with approximately 20% by weight of Keim Granital Dilution. Leave at least 12 hours before applying a second, undiluted coat of Keim Granital.
Typical consumption rates for a smooth lime plaster surface.
First Coat
Keim Granital Dilution 0.15 lt per square metre
Second Coat
Keim Granital 0.2 kg per square metre
Keim Granital Dilution 0.04 lt per square metre
Third Coat
Keim Granital 0.2 kg per square metre
Previously Painted Render
Follow the general preparation guidelines.
Application
We advise a first coat of Keim Granital Grob diluted with approximately 20% by weight Granital Dilution. Leave a minimum period of 12 hours before further decoration
Apply a coat of undiluted Keim Granital in the chosen colour by brush or roller, working well into all surfaces.
Typical consumption rates for previously painted surface (smooth)
First Coat (porous surfaces only)
Keim Granital Grob 0.2 kg per square metre
Keim Granital Dilution 0.04 lt per square metre
Second Coat
Keim Granital 0.2 kg per square metre
Previously Limewashed Surface
Follow the general preparation guidelines.
Specific considerations for limewashed surfaces.
The first coat of Keim Granital Grob will obliterate any hairline cracks. Any larger cracks over 1mm in width or where there is a need to equalise the surface should be filled using Keim Spachtel.
Application
We advise a first coat of Keim Granital Dilution, worked well into the surface with a brush or roller. Leave a minimum period of 12 hours before further decoration.
You should then apply a coat of Keim Granital Grob diluted with approximately 20% by weight Keim Granital Dilution. After 12 hours apply a final undiluted coat of Keim Granital in the chosen colour.
Typical consumption rates for a previously limewashed surface.
First Coat
Keim Granital Dilution 0.15 lt per square metre
Second Coat
Keim Granital Grob 0.2 kg per square metre
Keim Granital Dilution 0.04 lt per square metre
Third Coat
Keim Granital 0.2 kg per square metre
Unpainted Brick / Block
Follow the general preparation guidelines.
Application
We would recommend treating porous surfaces with a coat of Keim Granital Dilution. Apply with a brush or roller, working it into the surface. Leave a minimum period of 12 hours before further decoration
We then recommend 2 coats of Keim Granital, the first coat should be diluted with approximately 30% by weight of Keim Granital Dilution. After a minimum of 12 hours apply the second undiluted coat.
Typical consumption rates for a smooth lime plaster surface.
Pre- treatment for porous surfaces (if required)
Keim Granital Dilution 0.15 lt per square metre
First Coat
Keim Granital 0.25 kg per square metre
Keim Granital Dilution 0.07 lt per square metre
Second Coat
Keim Granital 0.25 kg per square metre
Roughcast / Tyrolean / Pebbledash
Follow the general preparation guidelines.
Application
We would recommend 2 coats of Keim Granital, the first coat should be diluted with approximately 40% by weight of Keim Granital Dilution. After a minimum of 12 hours apply the second coat diluted with approximately 5% by weight of Keim Granital Dilution.
Typical consumption rates for a smooth lime plaster surface.
First Coat
Keim Granital 0.4 kg per square metre
Keim Granital Dilution 0.16 lt per square metre
Second Coat
Keim Granital 0.35 kg per square metre
Keim Granital Dilution 0.02 lt per square metre

Cradle to Cradle Certification
Cradle to Cradle Certified® is the world’s most advanced, science-based standard for designing and making products today that enable a healthy, equitable, and sustainable tomorrow. Independent third parties examine and assess the substances contained in all products.
Cradle to Cradle Certified® sees materials as substances that are made available to new processes after use. All substances contained in the products must therefore be assessed scientifically for circularity.
All interior paints by KEIM have been awarded the Cradle to Cradle Certified® certificate in SILVER. In the areas of material health, water management and social fairness, the products achieved gold certification (the overall certification result is based on the lowest rated criterion).
